High-quality natural goose down products are functional and comfortable additions to your bedroom that can serve you well for years. Lower quality products simply don’t belong in your home. They’re already on the decline when you buy them and won’t last very long.
Put more simply, low quality down is a waste of money.
You see, natural products deserve to be treated with care. While you may carefully follow the directions that come with the things you buy, some products are damaged beyond repair before they leave their factories. That’s the case with many cheap feather and down products.
Overprocessed down is destined to fall flat.
Chemical Processing And Other Tricks
Cheap down pillows lose their softness because the natural material is over-processed. It may not have been very good in the first place.
Mass-produced down products are often actually made from a combination of feathers and inferior down that has been processed chemically and physically to make it seem softer. But this processing breaks the shaft of the feathers, allowing it to eventually disintegrate.
Refined feathers and down may start out soft, but they don’t stay fluffy for long. Soon, they’re flatter than a synthetic fibre pillow.
There’s another problem: Inexpensive down filler often comes from China and could be made of almost anything. In many cases, it’s less expensive duck down being sold as goose down — or perhaps a combination of the two. It could be less fluffy 550 fill sold as a better quality, fluffier and more expensive product.
Merchants are often unaware that what they think is high quality down from a reputable maker may actually be an inferior product being pawned off on customers that won’t notice the difference. Buying from a reputable company with a strong track record is the best way for you to avoid getting something other than what you’re paying for.
Those inexpensive fillers could also be dirty, unsanitary or smell bad. It’s enough to ruin a good night’s sleep. Never mind the impact it can have on your allergies and on indoor air quality.
Get What You’re Paying For
When you purchase a goose down product, choose a maker that deals exclusively with high-quality down from a good source.
The down should be carefully cleaned and sanitized without the use of harsh chemicals like bleach. The down clusters are extremely resilient when compressed if they haven’t been overprocessed. Clusters that have been subjected to bleach can splinter apart, break into prickly pieces and lose volume rapidly. And you don’t want that.
Good, carefully processed down clusters start out round and stay that way, despite years of use. These clusters that become high-quality goose down cost a bit more to purchase than inferior, chemically processed down and feather products. But they’re worth it. Inferior products aren’t worth the risk of bacteria, smells and bad night’s sleep.
Go with the best by going with genuine, minimally processed goose down — and go to sleep comfortably and confidently for years to come.
